| 中文摘要:赫德（Robert Hart）是中国海关史乃至中国近代史研究中一个无法绕过的人物。他二十九岁就登上了中国海关总税务司的宝座，统治中国海关四十八年，广泛参与了晚清时期中国的政治、经济、军事、外交等活动。作为一个西方人士，赫德之所以能游刃于晚清中国政府，与他具有丰富的性格特征有很大的关系。他性格复杂，有着善于“主动观察，分析和思考”的认知特征、“超乎寻常的自信和乐观，热情、勤奋、富有创造性”的情绪特征、“谦虚谨慎，在八面玲珑的处世方式下，掩盖着刚强、独裁的内心，对既定目标坚韧不拔，不达目的很少罢休”的意志特征和“时而浪漫真情，时而狡诈虚伪”的对现实生活态度特征。 |

| Robert Hart's personality characteristics |

| Abstract:Robert Hart was a figure that can not be overlooked in the studies on history of Chinese Customs and even in the modern Chinese history. At the age of 29, he became the Inspector General in the Chinese Customs and had dominated it for 48 years,and extensively participated in politics, economy, military affairs and diplomatic activities of late Qing dynasty. The fact that being a westerner Hart could easily go along very well with the Chinese government of Qing dynasty attributed much to his rich character. He was complicated and possessed the cognitive characteristic of being good at “active observation, analysis and thinking” and the emotional characteristic of “being extremely self-confident, optimistic, enthusiastic, diligent and creative”. He held both the volitional characteristic of being modest and prudent, and persisted in the fixed goal and never gave up with the covered firm and autocratic innermost being under the tactful and flexible way of doing things and also the attitude towards life by way of “expressing romantic true feeling sometimes and showing deceitful hypocrisy at the other times”. |
