| The Positive Impact of Chuanshanism on the Generals of Xiang Army |

| Abstract:The majority of the generals of Xiang Army in the late Qing dynasty promoted Chuanshanism, whose marked characteristics were found in unflagging patriotism inherited from the faithful late-ministers, Confucianism integrated with heroism and sainthood, and the ambitions to change the society for the betterment of the life of the ordinary people with their knowledge of the world. Therefore, it had great positive impacts on the generals of Xiang Army and gradually become the soul of the army guiding the generals, winning one victory after another in the battlefield. These marked characteristics not only contributed to the immortality of the Xiang Army, they also embodied the ideal personality sought by Xiang generals that the way of the king is to be armed with the contents of sainthood. |
