Dancing with One’s Own Shadows: An Interpretation of the Metaphors for Self in Zuckerman Unbound

Abstract:In Philip Roth’s Zuckerman Unbound (1981),there exist unique metaphorical relationships between different protagonists. Besides the focal figure Zuckerman, there are two mysterious figures: Caesara O’Shea the famous actress and Alvin Pepler the Jewish who was ever a TV Quiz Show Star. Culturally speaking, Caesara acts in the text as one of Zuckerman’s alter ego of being a celebrity, and Alvin as Nathan’s cultural alter ego of being a Jew. In this sense, the whole text might as well be regarded as a metaphoric game of the writer-protagonist’s alter egos.
