| He Xiu’s Monarch Theory in “Gongyang Jiegu” |

| Abstract:He Xiu presented his theory of monarchs and monarchy politics in Gongyang Jiegu, with the discussion of the historical records in The Spring and Autumn Annals, and from the perspective of the Gongyang School. His theory focuses on the maintaining of social order and peace, urging monarchs to improve their own morality, and exhibit themselves as the models of filial piety, honesty, and credibility before their people. His theory also advocates the political order of “Great Unity”, and the “Benevolent Ruling”, which is characterized by taking care of common people and appointing righteous men in government positions. On the issue of monarch-minister relationship, he holds the principle of “Serving the Monarch according to the Truth.” He even claims that there are genuine friendship between the monarch and his ministers. On the issue of throne succession, he respects the lineal primogeniture. |
