| A Critical Commentary on Jame Legge's Translation of The Book of Changes and His Opinions on Yi-ology |

| Abstract:James Legge's translation and research on The Book of Changes aroused much attention and criticism after its publication. In the history of transmitting The Book of Changes to the West, his translation and research has been a milestone, inspiring Chinese and Western scholars who were and are engaged in the research and translation of the Chinese ancient classics in many ways. The essay intends to probe into James Legge's translation of The Book of Changes per se, including his academic preparation before translation, the motivation of translating The Chinese Classics including The Book of Changes, the investigation of the basic texts and other reference books, as well as the evaluation, the format and characteristics of his translation of the book, so as to interpret his thoughts on Yi-ology. |
