| Obsession and Fearfulness: the Human Inspiration of David Mamet's Play American Buffalo |

| Abstract:In David Mamet's play American Buffalo, complicated contradictions, obsession and fearfulness of characters are vividly depicted by ingenious “Mamet Speak” and condensed and rich comic conflicts, in terms of three relations: language and action and truth, business and human sentiment and nature, money and goods and Good-Evil, with a view to demonstrating modern Americans' anxiety in economic life and crisis in spirit, and exposing the moral bankrupt of American society and the weakness of human nature. Its significance lies in that such a negative revelation will awake the Goodness of human nature, love and trust, which is the very realistic theme of the play's humanism. |
