The Third Space and Identity Representation: Post-Colonial Interpretation of Identity Construction in Tar Baby
Abstract:The African American woman Jadine’s identity is constructed by Toni Morrison in the novel Tar Baby in the “Third Space” with the context of the post-colonial mixed and intertwined culture, in which the identity is constructed in the process of overlap, competition and negotiation of diverse nations, social interests and cultural values with the characteristics of temporariness and instability. In shaping the identity of Jadine, Morrison aims to point out that the pursuit of their true identity for minorities, who share multicultural sense of belonging and itinerant social identity, cannot track back to the history of the nation, but should be based on the cross point of different cultures and capture the temporary identity of their own in the collision, hybridity and reconstruction of various relations. It is this unstable identity construction deconstructed the “either-or” which is the foundation of post-colonial culture.
