| Zeng Guo-fan's Confucianism Background and Intention of Rule by Rites in Sage Portrait Record |

| Abstract:Sage Portrait Record is an outline of Zeng Guo-fan's investigation, reflection and refinement of Chinese academic history. It takes Confucian classics as the main thread throughout the book, chooses models of different historical periods and disciplines , absorbs Laozi, Zhuangzi, Historical Records, Han Shu, and poetry and articles of various schools, and integrates the four disciplines theory of confucianism and Yao Nai's three-point theory into a single line, which shows the academic orientation based on Confucian classics. The author commends Du You's Tong Dian, Ma Duan-lin's Wen Xian Tong Kao and Qin Hui-tian's Five Rites Tong Kao for their achievements in investigating achievements of norms of etiquettes in the past dynasties, and speaks highly of Gu Yan-wu's idea of changing customs with etiquettes. The author's thought of rule by rites of "Confucian cultivation, country and the world, adhering to etiquettes" has been highlighted. |
