Annotated Version Reliance: Review of Zhou Yi Spreading in the West
Abstract:There are hundreds of thousands of different annotations for the book of change throughout the history of China. It is not possible for the westerners to understand the book without a good annotated version, the version they chose decided their understanding of the book. Therefore, the problem of “annotated version reliance” is raised. The official version of the book in the Ming and Qing Dynasty was Zhou Yi Ben Yi by Zhu Xi, but the renowned scholars Huang Zongxi, Gu Yanwu and Pi Xirui took Zhou Yi Cheng Shi Zhuan by Cheng Yi as the best annotated version. There are serious superstitious ideas in Zhou Yi Ben Yi, especially about Yi Diagrams, which includes he tu, luo shu, xian tian tu, etc. The Jesuits of Catholicism inthe late Ming Dynasty respected the official advice and translated the book of change mainly based on Zhou Yi Ben Yi, this is how the superstitious ideas in Zhou Yi subtly spread to the west.
