| 中文摘要:社会小说是晚清“小说界革命”的产物，是小说家们基于“救世”而进行的文学叙事。社会小说在晚清的发生分别与人们对英文词汇“society”的接受、小说家对社会与小说结合的期待，以及众多小说家们的身体力行等要素有关。社会小说对时代的关怀主要体现在两个层面：其一，以谴责为主，它们或揭示儒家伦理在晚清“破碎”之后的社会世相，或展示知识者在推崇西学过程中进行欺世盗名的“奇形”与“怪象”；其二，以救世为主，它们或期望做循序渐进的社会改良，或倡导革命才是拯救危机的唯一之路，或仰望融中学与西学于一体的“文明境界”。整体而言，晚清社会小说以其对社会特有的理解和叙述，不仅充分展示了小说家们对改良社会这一历史实践的关切之心，而且真实呈现出了他们因关切而介入其中的救世情怀。 |

| On the Historical Emergence and Contemporary Concerns of Late Qing Dynasty Social Novels |

| Abstract:Social novels are the product of the “Novel Revolution” in the late Qing Dynasty. They are literary narratives created by novelists with the intention of “saving the world”. The emergence of social novels in the late Qing Dynasty is related to several factors, including the acceptance of the English term “society” by the Chinese people, novelists’ expectation of the combination of society and novels, as well as the active practice of many novelists. The contemporary concerns of these novels are mainly reflected in two aspects: Firstly, they focus on denunciation, either revealing the social conditions after the “fragmentation” of Confucian ethics in the late Qing Dynasty or exposing the “bizarre and grotesque phenomena” of intellectuals who engaged in hypocrisy while promoting Western learning. Secondly, they focus on saving the world, either by advocating gradual social reform, promoting revolution as the only way to save the crisis, or aspiring to a “civilized realm” that integrates Chinese and Western learning. Overall, the late Qing Dynasty social novels, with their unique understanding and narration of the society, not only fully demonstrate the novelists’ concern for the historical practice of social improvement but also truly reflect their involvement and passion for saving the world. |
