| How is Critical Inquiry Possible —Examining Ouyang Xiu’s Hermeneutical Strategies and Intellectual Innovations in Interpreting the Book of Changes via the Question-and-Answer Form |

| Abstract:Ouyang Xiu’s interpretation of the Book of Changes adopts the question-and-answer form as its core discursive strategy，breaking through the exegetical paradigm of the Han and Tang dynasties. It advances the critical re-examination of classical studies and the turn toward philosophical reasoning in the Song Dynasty. As reflected in his works from the Yi Huo Wen to Yi Tongzi Wen，his question-and-answer form embodies three key intellectual breakthroughs：First，through “hypothetical questions and responses”， he demystified divinatory practices and established the “primacy of human affairs” as the core hermeneutic principle，while reconstructing the historical logic of the formation and transmission of classical texts. Second，via “pupil-and-master dialogue”，he activated rational inquiry，clarified conceptual boundaries and advanced dialectical reasoning by resolving textual contradictions. Third，by employing critical questioning，he deconstructed the authority of texts such as the Xici，proposing the principle of “adopting what is correct and discarding what is erroneous” when engaging with disputed passages. This stylistic innovation not only aligns with the Qingli Imperial Examination reform’s emphasis on broader principles，but also provides a methodological framework for the rise of Neo-Confucianism，thereby highlighting the profound interplay between literary strategy and intellectual transformation. |
